Notes: After going with a youth movement in 1995 and signing a number of high school and junior college standouts for 1996, the Cougars prepare to host the second SWC First Pitch Tournament and to reverse some close losses from 1995. Coach Rayner Noble has an experienced righthander in Chad Poeck (4-4 in 1995, formerly of Texas Tech and Blinn JC) and looks to lefty John Box (4-3) to continue to provide steady mound work. Houston made solid strides in the strikeouts-to-walks (348-216) department last season and hopes to receive some offensive firepower from the likes of catcher Brandon Milam (.303) and returning outfielder Dustin Carr. Losing all-purpose utilityman/pitcher Jason Farrow hurts, but young talent may abound.
