I know there are a lot Gusball fans out there that don't have easy access to news about the Horns so I decided to create this page which I hope will function as a catchall for miscellaneous news about the team. I'll update it any time I hear something about anyone affiliated with the team. The most recent news will always be at the top of the page. I'd like to invite any ex-Gusball players to drop me a line on what they're up to and I'll include that info here as well. There are a lot of Longhorn fans out here who'd love to hear what y'all are up to.

Coach Garrido announced his full-time assistant coaching staff this
afternoon: Burt Hooton (pitching coach) and Tommy Harmon
(recruiting coordinator). The third assistant coaching spot (a volunteer
position) will probably be filled by Ty Harrington or Rusty
Richards.

The Chicago Cubs recalled former Longhorn Brooks Kieschnick. He'll
take Sammy Sosa's (out with a broken hand) place on the roster. Kieschnick's

Augie Garrido (from Cal State Fullerton) has been hired as the new
UT baseball coach. He signed a 6-year deal. See
Coach
Garrido's profile on the Cal State Fullerton page.

Coach Gustafson announced his retirement today. See the
Statesman's
article. The Statesman has also set up a page dedicated to coverage of
the story at:

Kip Harkrider (Sophomore, ss) has made the final cut for the
20-man roster of the USA
Baseball Olympic team. Best of luck to Kip and the rest of the
team!
June 25, 1996
Kip Harkrider (Sophomore, ss) is on the 25-man travelling roster
of the USA Baseball Olympic
team. I drove down to San Antonio and watched the team beat Australia
(by a score of 7-1) last week. Harkrider went 3 for 4 and made a couple
of very nice defensive plays. I heartily encourage everyone to get out
and watch Team USA play if they come to your area. And, if that's not
possible, some of their games are being televised. You can catch the
team on July 1st playing the Olympic team from Cuba on either ESPN or
ESPN2. By the way, the team has to be cut to a 20-man roster by July
5th.

Wylie Campbell (Junior, 2b) has signed with the Reds and will
report to their rookie-league team in Billings, MT. Texas signee
Joey Hart (catcher from Round Rock High) has apparently turned
down an offer by the Astros and will be playing at Texas next year.
June 16, 1996
Former Longhorn Greg Swindell, released by the Astros earlier
this month, was signed by Cleveland on Friday (see the
AP story on the
Statesman's page).

The complete MLB amateur draft list has been released. There are a few
more Texas players listed. But I can't tell from the list, which rounds
they were taken in. And so...additional Texas draftees: Mark
Cridland (Junior, rf) by the Cleveland Indians and Donny Barker
(Sophomore, rhp) is added to the list of Scott Leon and Trey
Salinas (who've already signed) by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. I've
updated my summary of the draft page to
reflect other SWC players and the Minor twins ('cause I so dreaded seeing
them come to the plate whenever they were in town) from OU.
June 13, 1996
Jason Layne (Senior, dh) has signed a free-agent contract with
Kansas City and has been invited to the team's mini-camp in Spokane, WA.
And, another coach is on his way out: James Ellison who handled
the pitching coach duties (see the Statesman's
article).
June 11, 1996
Deron Gustafson is leaving the Longhorn coaching squad (see
Rick
Cantu's article in the Statesman for full story). [The link is
broken. I will fix it if the Statesman puts the article back online.]
Tampa Bay has signed Scott Leon (Junior, rhp) and Trey
Salinas (Sophomore, c/3b/rf). In general, Sophomores are not
eligible for the draft; however, Salinas was eligible because he'd
reached the age of 21 by the required deadline. Kansas City has signed
Roman Escamilla (Senior, c).
June 9, 1996
Danny Peoples (Junior, 1b) has signed with Cleveland (signing
bonus of $400,000.00) and will report to the Indian's extended spring
training camp in Winter Haven, Fla., and then to Watertown, which
begins its New York-Penn League season in less than two weeks. See
the full
story as reported by the Akron Beacon Journal Online.

'Just heard that Wylie Campbell (Junior, 2b) was drafted by
Cincinnati in the 7th round and Roman Escamilla (Senior, c) by
Kansas City in the 17th. Complete 1st round info as well as info
about SWC draftees is available from my
MLB Amateur Draft page.

1b) was drafted in the first round (28th pick overall) by the Cleveland
Indians. Jake O'Dell (Senior, rhp) was drafted in the 11th round
by the Oakland A's. Check out my summary of
