Comments

Scott Leon pitched a fabulous game...a 2-hit shutout. He only allowed four Rice players on base, 2 in the 2nd (on a single and a walk), 1 in the 6th (on a walk), and one in the 9th (on a single).

Texas scoring summary:

• 1st inning
  • Harkrider popped out to ss.
  • Campbell flew out on a line drive to cf.
  • Byers bunted safely along the 3b line.
  • Peoples doubled to rf to score Byers. Rice might've had a chance to throw Byers out at home plate but Venghaus threw to the ss covering 2b rather than the cutoff man. That was just the beginning of a frustrating day for Venghaus.
  • Layne popped up to 2b.
• 2nd inning
  • Escamilla popped up to 1b.
  • Salinas singled up the middle.
  • Kiemsteadt hit an infield single.
  • Kieth went down swinging.
  • Harkrider hit a double to cf to score Salinas. Kiemsteadt was gunned down at the plate on the throw in from cf via the cutoff man.
• 3rd and 4th innings - Texas went down in order.
• 5th inning
  • Kiemsteadt led off the inning with a walk.
  • Keith hit a sacrifice bunt down the 1b line to advance Kiemsteadt. On a very close play, Doyle lunged to tag Keith out on the leg as he ran to 1b.
  • Harkrider hit an infield single...one of those hits where the batter swings away but the ball just kind of dribbles along the line like a bunt. Herndon quickly jumped off the mound and scooped up the ball but had no play.
  • Campbell hit a double to rf that Venghaus seemed to lose in the sun. It sailed over his head and Kiemsteadt scored. Harkrider failed to score because he'd held up to see if Venhaus was going to catch the ball.
  • Rice sent Shaddix in to pitch.
  • The ump called the 1-1 pitch to Byers a ball. Someone in the Rice dugout objected and the ump warned the dugout to pipe down. Rice assistant coach Jon Prather (who used to catch for Texas in the late 80's) said something to the ump and was ejected from the game. A rather long delay ensued as Prather and the ump had a very "spirited" discussion at the plate.
  • Byers hit a 3-2 pitch to lf for a single to score Harkrider.
  • Peoples hit a triple to rf to clear the bases...it looked like it was going to clear the fence but hit a foot or two from the top.
  • Rice sent Allen Brown in to pitch after Shaddix threw a ball on his first pitch to Layne.
  • Layne walked to put runners at the corners.
  • Escamilla then hit into a 6-4 fielder's choice and scored Peoples.
  • Salinas hita single to rf.
  • Kiemsteadt came up to bat for the second time in the inning. He hit a double off the lf wall (another shot that looked like it was headed over the fence) for a double to clear the bases.
  • Rice sent Taylor in to pitch.
  • Keith finally ended the inning by grounding out to 2b.
• 6th inning - Texas stranded Harkrider and Campbell in scoring position.
• 7th inning - Texas stranded Kiemsteadt at 1b.
• 8th inning
  • Harkrider grounded out to 1b.
  • Campbell walked.
  • Rice sent Baker in to pitch.
  • Baker hit Byers with his third pitch.
  • Peoples walked to load the bases.
  • Rice sent Terrana in to pitch.
  • Layne grounded out to 2b. Campbell scored as Byers and Peoples advanced.
  • Escamilla singled to score Byers.
  • Braswell (who went in at 3b at the top of the 8th) singled to score Peoples.
  • Kiemsteadt grounded out to ss.
