The Horns trailed for most of the game but rallied in the 9th to take the third game of the 4-game weekend series. Both teams struggled with control on the pitcher's mound as Rice walked 12 and Texas walked 13. Texas got into trouble early as Lopez walked the first three batters he faced. Berkman then hit into a 3-2-3 double play. He hit toward Peoples who threw to Escamilla to get Richards out. Escamilla's throw back to 1b hit Berkman in the back. The 1b umpire ruled that Berkman was inside the baseline so he called him out and called the baserunners at 2b and 3b back to 1b and 2b, respectively. Ford then grounded out to 1b. In the bottom of the inning, Campbell walked, was moved to 2b on a ground out to 1b, stole 3b, and scored on a wild pitch.

In the 3rd, Richards walked to lead off the inning. Venghaus hit a double to score Richards and then he stole 3b. Crosby hit a sacrifice fly to lf to score Venghaus. Berkman doubled and Ford singled to score Berkman. Doyle grounded out to 2b and Cathey went down swinging to retire the side. Texas left the bases loaded without scoring in the bottom of the inning.

In the 4th, McLaughlin singled and then Joseph walked. Texas sent Weaver in to pitch (his first appearance in several weeks...he'd been out with a sore arm). Weaver walked the bases loaded and then walked in a run. he got Crosby to hit into a 1-2-3 double play. Texas then intentionally walked Berkman. Ford grounded out to 2b. Texas went down in order in the bottom of the 4th.

Texas pulled to within one run of Rice by scoring single runs in the 5th and 6th. In the 7th, Peoples tied the game as he led off the inning by hitting one of the highest hit homeruns I've ever seen at the Disch. The ball looked like it easily cleared the score board over the left field fence. An amazing hit.

In the top of the 8th, Rice scored two more runs. With 2 outs and runners at 2b and 3b, Texas intentionally walked Berkman again. Ford then popped out to 3b. Whew. Intentional walks always make me nervous. I sure was glad to see the strategy work for Texas both times they tried it today.

Texas went down in order in the bottom of the 8th and Rice stranded two in the top of the 9th. In the bottom of the 9th, Peoples walked, Layne popped up to 2b, and Escamilla singled. Keith went in to pinch run for Escamilla. Runners at 1b and 2b. Salinas struck out looking. Kiemsteadt then hit a long double to the lf/cf gap to tie up the game. For a minute, I thought it was going to be a homerun to the same spot he'd hit earlier in the day but it was a few feet short. Davis then hit the first pitch he saw to the top of the rf fence just inside the foul pole to score Kiemsteadt.

Texas wins. What an exciting finish. The team poured onto the field as soon as it was clear Davis' hit was going to score Kiemsteadt. Half of them mobbed Kiemsteadt and the other half mobbed Davis. It was a very tough loss for Rice and I felt bad for them. But, as the conference race is shaping up, it's looking like Tech is going to be the team to beat (I think this was predicted by most people at the beginning of the season) and Texas has to stay on pace with them.
