It was a nice evening for baseball...60 degrees (F) and a breeze going out to left. O'Dell went one out short of pitching his 3rd complete game of the year. He just ran out of steam at the end of the game.
Rice jumped to an early lead in the first. Venghaus reached on a walk. Doyle hit a double deep into the lf/cf gap to score Venghaus. Texas went down in order in the 1st and 2nd. In the 3rd, Onley struck out Salinas and Kiemsteadt. Edelstein hit a single and then Harkrider struck out. The game seemed very even as Rice also went down in order in the 2nd and 3rd. In the top of the 4th, Ford successfully bunted on with two outs but was stranded at 1b. In the bottom of the inning, Campbell tried to bunt his way on and only missed being successful by one step to make the first out. Byers hit a single to right. Peoples then hit a towering homerun over the lf fence to move Texas ahead.
Things totally fell apart for Rice pitching in the 5th. Kiemsteadt hit a single to left. Edelstein reached on a error (but was credited with a sacrifice bunt). Both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Harkrider walked to load the bases. Campbell, Byers, and Peoples walked to push three runs across. Rice finally replaced Onley with Taylor who managed to throw a wild pitch to the first batter he faced (Layne) to advance all the runners (and score another run). He ended up walking Layne to load the bases again. Escamilla hit a sacrifice fly to cf to score Byers. That left Peoples at 2b and Layne at 1b. Salinas went down swinging as Peoples and Layne both broke on the double steal. Peoples was caught on the play (2-5) to complete the double play and end the inning.
In the 7th, Cathey hit a double to the lf/cf gap. Joseph then reached on a fielder's choice as O'Dell made a bit of a mental error. Joseph hit a ball sharply at the pitcher and he threw to Harkrider covering 2b to try and catch Cathey in a run down between 2b and 3b. But, Cathey made it back to 2b safely as Joseph safely reached 1b. McLaughlin (pinch hitting for Fuller) went down swinging. Richards hit a single to lf that Harkrider managed to keep from getting to the outfield on a great diving catch. Bases loaded...one out. Venghaus then walked to score Cathey. Doyle then hit into a double play to end the inning. Whew. In the bottom of the inning, Campbell flew out to cf. Byers walked and then stole 2b. Peoples walked. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and then Layne walked to load the bases. Escamilla hit a single to score Byers and Peoples. He tried to stretch it into a double and was caught at 2b to make the second out, though. Rice then brought Herndon in to pitch. He got Salinas to ground out to 1b.
The 8th was rather uneventful as both teams stranded a baserunner at 1b. In the 9th, Rice tried to rally but alas...too little, too late. Joseph grounded out to 3b. McLaughlin then hit a double to the cf/rf gap. Richards popped up to shallow cf. Venghaus then hit a single up the middle. Doyle hit a 2-rbi double to the lf/cf gap. Coach Gus went out to talk to O'Dell who seemed to have run out of steam. O'Dell said he wanted the chance to pitch to Berkman again. Berkman took the first pitch over the rf fence. Ouch. So, Clements came in to face Ford who hit a single up the middle. Out came Clements and in went French. Ford stole 2b and Landry reached on a walk. Crosby (who, according to the radio announcers, hadn't played earlier in the game due to torn ligaments in his thumb...and is questionable for the rest of the series) came in to pinch hit for Cathey. French got him to fly out to lf to end the game. Texas holds on. Whew.
