Comments

Texas gets its first shutout of the year. Adare had a fine performance in his first start as a Longhorn...going 6-2/3 innings and keeping ORU to 2 hits.

There were plenty of offensive stars today. Kiemsteadt, Byers, and Peoples all hit solo homeruns. Byers ended up 3 for 4 and scored another run.

Campbell had an unusual day running the bases. He went 4 for 4 with 3 singles and a double. He singled to get on in the 1st and then was picked off by a mile by Barrett (who had a very unusual and quick movement to 1b). In his next at-bat, Campbell doubled to get on base. He was then hit by Byers' single toward ss to be put out. He saw Byers' ball was not going to get through the infield and was headed back to 2b when the ball glanced off the pitcher's glove and hit him. His 3rd at-bat was rather uneventful...he singled and then was stranded at 2b. In the 7th, he singled to get on and advanced Edelstein to 3b. At that point, the Horns had runners at the corners and two outs. Byers was at the plate waiting for the 0-2 pitch when Campbell broke for 2b...a designed double steal trick play. As he was caught in the rundown, Edelstein scored fairly easily from 3b. Campbell almost managed to make it back to 1b safely.

The 8th was a rather exciting inning for the Horns as Byers took the second pitch he saw over the left field fence...it hit about half way up the scoreboard. ORU changed pitchers and Peoples took the second pitch he saw over the left field fence on a hard-hit line drive. Escamilla singled up the middle and Braswell moved him to 2b on a sacrifice bunt. Layne brought Escamilla home on a hard-hit double to right that was deflected of the first baseman's glove. Kiemsteadt then struck out and Edelstein flew out to lf to end the inning.

One last note about the Texas offense...Escamilla seemed totally stumped by Barrett. He went down swinging all three times he faced the ORU starting pitcher.

A few ORU players (including Rios, yesterday's ss) were apparently down with the flu today. I wish them all a speedy recovery.

And, finally...the wild bunch (who sit above the visitor dugout along the 1b line) were in rare and fine form today. They started off by entering en masse from the 3b side of the stands. They proceded to parade through the main walkway as they played kazoos. They kept up the kazoo playing and chanting throughout the game. 'Not sure what the occasion was, but they seemed to be having a grand time. Sadly, my seats are so far away from them, that I couldn't make out most of what they were chanting. 'Looked like lots of fun.
