A very good game...and a tough loss for O'Dell. The difference was one pitch that CSF's Seal (who'd only had about 10 at bats prior to today's game) took way over the right field fence. It was a cold day with a fairly stiff wind throughout the game. The temperature went from 44 (degrees F) to 42 and then back up to 43 by the end of the game.
Not many highlights, really. Campbell was back in the lineup...batting ninth. He was caught stealing in the 5th on a pretty close play after getting a base on balls. Loeffler's been okayed to bat and came in to pinch hit for his first at bat of the year...he popped up near the CSF dugout to the pitcher. Texas had their best chances to score in the 4th and 8th innings. In the 4th, Peoples led off with a single to left. Layne then walked. Escamilla advanced the runners on a sacrifice bunt. Davis went down swinging and Salinas grounded out to short. In the 8th, Harkrider flew out to left. Edelstein singled up the middle. Byers then reached on a fielder's choice. He moved to 2b as Peoples drew a base on balls. Layne (who'd hit four homeruns in the Horns' previous three games) took a monster swing at the first pitch across the plate and popped up to shallow center field. Both teams went down in order in the 9th.
It was sad to see the Horns lose but they played a solid, error-free game so it's hard to complain. It was great seeing them do so well against the #1 team in the country and defending national champs.
