Another exciting game. It was very close and could've gone either way up until the 8th.

It didn't start off very well for Kansas' Vann who had back-to-back fielding errors in lf against Texas' first two batters. Campbell hit a 2-2 pitch to right center and Vann chased it down but bobbled the catch allowing the fleet-of-foot Campbell to make it all the way to 3b. Harkrider then hit a 1-2 pitch very high and rather shallow to left which Vann seemed to lose in the sun...bobble #2. Campbell scored easily. Harkrider was picked off almost immediately...a very good head's up play by Kansas pitcher Peters who realized Harkrider wasn't quite into baserunning mode after arriving at 1b so unexpectedly. Needless to say, the Wild Bunch gave Vann a standing ovation as he jogged back into the Kansas dugout after Texas' last out.

I sorta felt for Vann as he didn't have a very good day at the plate, either. He struck out, hit a sacrifice bunt, and hit into two double plays. Wylie Campbell should probably send him flowers or something. I mean...first there were the two errors in the 1st allowing Campbell to score and then Vann slipped in the 8th allowing Campbell a single which should've been caught. Campbell was also part of both double plays...one of them a solo double play as he caught Vann's hard-hit line drive and then ran to 3b on his way to the dugout to get Meadows out who'd taken off from 3b at the crack of the bat. I've got my fingers crossed that Campbell is out of his slump.

Obviously, the 8th inning made the difference in the game for Texas. Layne started things off with a double to right. Escamilla walked. Kansas decided to see if left-hander Williams could get Edelstein out but he walked as well. Kansas brought Pruett in to pitch. He hit Kiemsteadt with his second pitch giving Kiemsteadt an easy (if somewhat painful) rbi. Pruett then struck out Braswell to get the Jayhawks' first out. Then Campbell got his 3rd hit of the day (on Vann's slip that I mentioned above) to score Escamilla. Harkrider hit a sacrifice fly to lf which scored Edelstein and advanced Kiemstead to 3b. Campbell stole 2b for the second time in as many innings. Byers then hit a double over the first baseman's head to score Kiemsteadt and Campbell. Peoples hit a single to score Byers. Layne (10th batter of the inning) flew out to cf to retire the side. That meant the end of the game for Kansas as they went down in order (fly out to center, fly out to right, and called strike out) in the top of the 9th.

Texas pitching looked much stronger today and the team seemed much more relaxed. An error-free game is something to celebrate this season as the Horns are averaging 2 errors per game. This contrasts severely with their 1 error per game average last year when the defense ended the season ranked #2 in the nation.
