A very exciting game...too bad the Horns lost.
Both teams loaded the bases in the first inning but neither managed to capitalize.
Campbell finally got a base hit in the 3rd (sadly, he was then part of Kansas' only double play as Harkrider hit a ground ball straight at the second baseman) but added to his error total on an errant throw to 1b (giving him a total of 8 errors on the year) which allowed a run to score.
Peoples had a perfect day at the plate. He almost hit for the cycle as he walked, had two doubles, a triple, and a 2-run homerun.
Escamilla hit his first homerun of the year in the 6th to help the Horns match the 4 runs Kansas scored in the top of the inning. They got those runs in a rather unusual way. Smith came in to pitch at the beginning of the inning. Sparky (gotta love that classic baseball first name, eh?) Wilhelm hit a single and advanced to 2b on a wp. Matthews bunted safely down the 3b line. Smith thought he had a play at 3b but the runner had the jump on the defense...by the time Smith threw to 1b, it was too late. Runners at the corners. The Horns had Matthews caught in a run down and Wilhelm started toward home. Layne's throw to the plate was too late and Matthews ended up safe at 2b. DeMarco bunted safely (again down the 3b line) advancing Matthews to 3b. Matthews and DeMarco advanced (Matthews scored) on Smith's first pitch to Byrd...which was wild. Powell then replaced Smith and inherited Byrd with a 1-0 count. Byrd hit a single to right center and Kliner hit a double to score Byrd. Headley finally made the first out of the inning by flying out to shallow lf. Dimmick hit a single to rf and Escamilla threw Kliner out at the plate. Walrond flew out to right to retire the side. Whew.
The Horn's two runs in the 9th came with two outs...always exciting. Campbell grounded out to 3b. Harkrider then popped up to ss. Byers got a sharply hit single to left (after grounding out to 3b his previous 3 at-bats). Peoples then hit his 2-run hr way over the left field fence. Kansas changed pitchers and Barrett proceeded to walk the first three batters he faced. Keith, who'd come in to pinch hit in the 8th then struck out swinging on a 2-2 pitch. It looked like a foul tip that the catcher didn't hang on to but...apparently not. End of game.
The bullpen continues to struggle . Smith had a great outting earlier in the week...a triumphant return to the squad after missing all of last year on a medical red shirt. Sadly, today was a different story as the team went through 5 relievers.
