Sigh...Texas seems to be back to this odd thing that's passing for "normal" this season. At the moment, the team's biggest problem appears to be its pitching...particularly where the bull pen's concerned. Jake O'Dell had a decent outting. He kept the Horns in the game but Zamarripa had to go in a bit earlier than I imagine Coach Gus would've liked. He started out with a very strong 1-2/3 innings.

But, then the defense started having problems. With one out, Sugden hit a short fly ball to right that Cridland couldn't quite catch up with...error. It's a tough call. If he'd made the catch, it would've been a spectacular play but...he didn't. Earlier in the game, he had another "almost-spectacular" catch on a high fly ball that got caught up in the wind. It kept drifting further and further to right but Cridland managed to catch up to it just inside the foul line and about two steps from the wall. Then, he hit the wall and, sadly, dropped the ball. The batter (Wolf, who was the winning pitcher in Friday's game) ended up with a triple but he was stranded at 3b so no big loss. Sadly, in the eighth, it was a different story. After the missed ball to rf, Matranga hit what looked like a fairly routine double-play ball through Campbell's legs...another error. That would've ended the inning with no runs scored. Sadly, Zamarripa walked the next batter and that was the end for him. Leon came in and walked in a run. Then, Konrady hit a sacrifice fly to rf to score another run and Wolf hit an rbi single to cf. That left the Horns down 6-4 going into the bottom of the 8th. It looked like they might rally when Layne hit a homerun off the top of the right-center field wall. But, the Horns ended up stranding 2.

In the ninth, things didn't get any better as Pepperdine scored 5 more runs on an error, a walk, 3 singles, and a double. In the bottom of the ninth, Brubaker hit Byers, Peoples reached on a fielder's choice, and then Cridland hit into a double play. End of game...not a pretty picture.

A few random notes: Campbell is really struggling and having a tough time at the plate. Coming into today's game, he was only hitting .151. His error in the eighth (his 3rd of the year...he made a total of 9 errors last year) makes you wonder if it isn't starting to have an adverse affect on his defense as well. On a happier note, Harkrider hit the first homerun of his Longhorn career. And it was a beauty...it soared over the right field fence in the first inning to put the Horns up by one. Zamarripa seems like a Freshman with lots of promise...it's nice seeing local guys (Zamarripa graduated from Bowie last year) doing so well on the team.
