What a fun game! Cridland's pinch hit homerun obviously made the difference.

Pepperdine's starter (Gregory) had a very uneventful first 5 innings allowing only one run on a very unusual play. That run was scored in the 1st inning when Byers got to 1b on a fielder's choice with 2 outs. Gregory threw a lazy toss to 1b just to keep Byers honest but it got away from him and skipped over the first baseman's head and rolled way down the retaining fence. Byers took off as the right fielder and first baseman chased down the ball. He slowed down coming around third and it looked like he'd get caught at home but the throw to the plate was about 10 feet off-target (between the plate and 1b dugout) and Byers ended up scoring fairly easily on the pitcher's error.

Texas kept themselves in the game in the fifth when Edelstein threw a bullet dead on target from left to home to nail Cosbey and keep Pepperdine from scoring their 3rd run. Oder made it to 3rd on the same play. A couple of minutes later, he got caught in a rundown after Barker had done the double fake to 3b and 1b a couple of times. The third time, Barker faked to 3b and 1b and then threw to 3b totally catching Oden off-guard. That was the 3rd out and ended Pepperdine's biggest threat of the game.

In the 6th, Campbell grounded out to ss, Harkrider singled up the middle, Byers singled to left, and Peoples hit a sacrifice fly out to deep left/center moving Harkrider to 3b. Left hander Gregory was yanked in favor of right handed Gibbons as Escamilla (who bats from the right) came up to bat. Coach Gus sent Cridland who swings from the left in to pinch hit. He lifted the third pitch waaaaaay over the right field fence. Despite his .190 average, Cridland's got a .524 slugging percentage on the year and his HR today was his team-leading 3rd of the season.
