I didn't really keep score because the teams rarely stick to the "letter of
the law" as far as the rules go during the Alumni game. Today was no
exception. The "violation" that stood out most vividly was that Williamson
didn't bat in order down around the 7th or 8th. Something like that always
seems to happen during the Alumni game as both coaches try to get most of
the players into the game at some point.
The game was fun. It was a little chilly but not nearly as bad as most
years as the temperature stayed in the lower 50's for the entire game.
Marcus Hendry (who lettered at UT '93-94) sang the National Anthem at the
start of the game...just like he did for several games when he was still
wearing the orange and white. It was great.
Several fans were very vocal toward Roger Clemens and the rest of the Major
Leaguers who didn't show up at last year's game due to the strike. It was
clear the fans hadn't forgotten and weren't happy about the situation. Once
the game was underway, however, most of the bad feelings seemed to fade.
Or, at least, people decided to move forward and enjoy the game.
Anyway...here are some notes on how each player did.
Alumni
- Scott Bryant (lettered at UT '87-89)
- ...played lf for the first 6 or 7 innings...the most notable thing
about his play, however, had to be his three strikeouts at the plate.
That's something you don't see very often.
- Roger Clemens (lettered at UT '82-83)
- ...pitched the first inning and threw his first pitch about 10 feet
over the batter's head...as he does every year. He didn't have the
greatest outting as he allowed 2 singles, 2 doubles, and a triple (4
runs resulted). He threw one strikeout and recorded the loss.
- Dennis Cook (lettered at UT '84-85)
- ...pitched the 4th inning.
- Bobby Cuellar (lettered at UT '72, '74)
- ...acted as one of the Alumni coaches.
- Robert DeLeon (lettered at UT '92)
- ...played ss and then 2b during the last half of the game or so.
He had two strikeouts and grounded out to 3b. He also had a
throwing error to 1b.
- Kirk Dressendorfer (lettered at UT '88-90)
- ...pitched the 6th inning.
- Jose Flores (lettered at UT '94)
- ...played 3b most (all?) of the game. At the plate, he grounded
out to ss, walked (and eventually scored a run), got a double and
a single.
- Scott Fredrickson (lettered at UT '90)
- ...pitched 2/3 of the 7th.
- Todd Haney (lettered at UT '86-87)
- ...played 2b and then ss. He had a good game in the field. At
plate, he popped out to 1b, grounded out to 3b (sac), walked, and
had one strikeout.
- Larry Hardy (lettered at UT '68-70)
- ...acted as one of the Alumni coaches.
- Tim Harkrider (lettered at UT '91-93)
- This was the second year in a row that the Harkrider brothers
played against each other at the Alumni game. Tim and Kip both
started at ss. It's fun getting to watch both of them play. Tim
didn't play long, though, and had one throwing error to 1b and a
strikeout during his only plate appearance.
- Burt Hooton (lettered at UT '69-71)
- ...acted as one of the Alumni coaches. I have to say that it's
always great to see Hooton at the game.
- Rudy Jaramillo (lettered at UT '73)
- ...acted as one of the Alumni coaches.
- Ryan Kjos (lettered at UT '92-94)
- ...pitched the last 1/3 inning of the 8th. He walked one batter
and got the last out on a fc.
- Clint Koppe (lettered at UT '94)
- ...pitched the first 2/3 inning of the 8th and had one strikeout.
- Stephen Larkin (lettered at UT '92-94)
- ...came into the game around the 6th at 1b and then moved to lf.
He had one of the Alumni errors on a bad throw to the pitcher who
was covering 1b. At the plate, he had a single and grounded out
to 1b.
- Roger Luce (lettered at UT '90-91)
- Luuuuuuce played c for about the first half of the game. At the
plate, he flew out to rf and grounded out to 3b.
- Keith Moreland (lettered at UT '73-75)
- ...acted as one of the Alumni coaches...he was also miked and
talked to the radio announcers during much of the game. Sadly, I
forgot to take my radio so didn't get to hear any of his comments.
Sigh...it's tough getting into the swing of things as the new
season rolls around!
- Shea Morenz (lettered at UT '93-95)
- ...played rf for the entire game. At the plate, he had a strikeout,
a saf to rf, a 2-rbi single, and he flew out to cf.
- Calvin Murray (lettered at UT '92)
- ...played cf for the entire game. At the plate, he popped out
twice, walked twice (scoring a run each time), and flew out to lf.
- Mark Petkovsek (lettered at UT '85-87)
- ...pitched the 5th inning.
- Scott Pugh (lettered at UT '90-91)
- ...played 1b for the first half of the game or so. Pugh had one of
the Alumni errors At the plate, he grounded out to 2b and struck
out once.
- Steve Randolph (lettered at UT '95)
- ...played 1b for the last 2 or 3 innings and grounded out to ss
during his only plate appearance.
- Bruce Ruffin (lettered at UT '85)
- ...pitched the 3rd inning.
- Greg Swindell (lettered at UT '84-86)
- ...pitched the 2nd inning.

- ...pitched the last 1/3 of the 7th inning.
- Joel Williamson (lettered at UT '93)
- ...started at dh and then moved to c for the last half of the game.
He struck out, popped out twice, and flew out to cf at the plate.
Rodney Pedraza (lettered at UT '89-91), J. D. Smart ('93-95), Jerry Taylor
('93-95), and Jose Tolentino ('83) were also at the game but didn't end up
playing.
