The temperature stayed at 68 deg F for the entire game and there was a stiff wind to right throughout. Texas had two of the most inconsistent back-to-back defensive innings I can ever remember seeing:
  1. In the first, French only threw 4 pitches while Peoples and Harkrider made two terrific defensive plays. It was pretty.

  2. In the second, Texas fell asleep. Denton flew out to center and Smith got aboard on a walk. Linhardt then hit what should have been a double play ball to Harkrider but he apparently thought there were already two outs because he just stepped on second and started jogging toward the dugout. Oops. Then, Stalnaker hit a single and Spencer walked to load the bases. Johnston then hit a 2 rbi single on which Spencer advanced to 3rd. Then, VCU pulled a double steal trick play (a Texas favorite) and Texas fell for it...allowing Spencer to score as Johnston stayed alive between 1b and 2b until after the run scored. Sigh. As I said, the whole thing should've been over with no runs scored after the third batter.
Another defensive highlight came in the 7th when Edelstein (lf) gunned Johnston down at home. The VCU 3b coach had the stop sign on all the way as Johnston rounded 3rd but Johnston ignored him. Tsk tsk.

In the bottom of the 7th, VCU took a gamble and intentionally walked Morenz to load the bases. Layne then hit (0-2 count) into a double play to end the inning. Ouch.

The offensive highlight came, of course, in the bottom of the ninth as Peoples hit a towering homerun (2 rbi) into the wind over the left field fence.

All in all, a pretty eventful game.
